International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at Lakeland Elementary School

WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE?

Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation offering four highly respected programmes of international education that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Schools must be authorized, by the IB organization, to offer any of the programmes.

Lakeland Elementary School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) World School fully authorized in April of 2016.  Thanks to a three year, $3.3 million grant from the Kellogg Foundation, students, staff and community we reached our goal of Wold School status in three years!

The Elk Rapids Schools school board, administration, and staff in conjunction with parent representation felt that the opportunities resulting from an IB education allow us to deliver the best educational program to the students and families in our community. Beginning at age 3 our students receive Spanish as a second language, all teaching and support staff continue to receive world class professional development, an inquiry model of teaching drives learning in the classroom and will help students achieve the skills and knowledge needed for the 21st century.

WHAT IS THE IB MISSION STATEMENT?

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

WHAT IS THE PYP?

The PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom. The International Baccalaureate Programme is applicable to lead academic success for ALL learners, ages 3-12, not a select few.

WHAT CURRICULUM IS BEING TAUGHT?

The IB provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements — the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future.

Schools work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging primary curriculum for international education.

The PYP aims to create a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners ages 3–12. The curriculum is transdisciplinary, meaning that it focuses on issues that go across subject areas.

Elk Rapids Schools uses state and national standards to deliver the curriculum. The Common Core State Standards are used for Language Arts and Math. Science is taught using the Next Generation Science Standards and social studies is delivered using the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations.

WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS?

Education for international mindedness values the world as the broadest context for learning, develops conceptual understanding across a range of subjects and offers opportunities to inquire, act and reflect.

WHAT IS THE LEARNER PROFILE?

The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century.

The learner profile provides a long-term vision of education. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose.

The attributes and descriptors of the learner profile define the type of learner the IB hopes to develop through its programmes.
